Walks and keeping fit

Moving calmly with awareness along the gentler pathways is the easiest way of letting go and finding inspiration. You can follow the stream or the many other inviting paths. And the forest tracks provide a wonderful, oxygen-rich space for running or Nordic walking .


Setting out from the farmstead you’ll find a variety of fascinating routes. We recommend the walk up to the palace of Beriz and Azkua, the path to ‘Hell’s mill’ and on the other side of the village, the paths of Palomeras, Peña plata and sus Crómlech. The route around the village across the hills is a full 50 km long.

By bike

The green way which runs alongside the Bidasoa from the sea to the Baztan valley as well as the secondary roads of the Navarran countryside are ideal for gentle bike rides. More adventurous road cyclists will find plenty of challenges in the stretches that are part of the Basque grand tour while the mountain bike trails will thrill those who prefer the off-road experience.


Within 80km you’ll find a whole variety of different locations. We are situated in between Navarra, Gipuzkoa and Aquitaine. Half an hour from the natural beach of Hendaya or the famous caves of Zugarramurdi and Sara. Both inland and coastal towns and villages such as Hondarribia and San Juan de Luz and the cities of San Sebastián (45 min) and Pamplona (60 min).


There are various places of special interest or beauty which you can easily visit from our house.


Before going further afield you should really get to know the surrounding woods, going as far as you want to by foot. You can go up to Aizkolegi and Azkua, go deep into the woods up to ‘Hell’s mill’… we’ll be happy to inform you about the many routes.


Etxalar is a picture postcard village with traditional houses and farms in beautiful condition. You can stroll through the streets, marvel at the buildings and the hidden away corners, stop for a drink or a snack and even play Basque pelota… 6km.


Then you can head in towards Bortziri, Malerreka and the Baztán valley. We recommend the botanical gardens of the natural park Señorío de Bertiz, the Zubieta mill, Leurtza dam, Elizondo, the Xoroxin waterfall, the magical springs of San Juan Zahar. 10-40km.


Frequently visited places include the Zugarramurdi caves, Sara and Urdax which will lead you to the inland and coastal towns of Aquitaine: Hendaye, San Juan de luz, Biarritz and Bayonne. 20-60km


Discover the towns and villages, beaches and cities of the coast of Guipuzcoa: Hondarribia, San Sebastián, Zarautz, Getaria y Lekeitio. 30-60km.


Within an hour you can go through the port of Belate and along the Ulzama valley to reach the historic city of Pamplona from where the roads open up to the south of Navarra and La Rioja. 60-100km.


In the village of Arrantza, 25 minutes from our house, there is a park with challenging mountain bike trails and several aerial runways including the longest in Europe. Bertiz adventure park offers Arboling (Tree climbing), rafting, bike hire etc. In Elgorriaga (45 minutes away) you’ll find a salt water spa. 10-40km.


Throughout the summer there are town and village fiestas, one after the other, with music, dance, regional food and country sports. And there’s no better way to celebrate the end of the winter than at the country carnival of Zubieta, Lanz, Sunbilla and Etxalar. San Sebastian hosts festivals throughout the year, with the highlights being the Jazzaldia in July and the Cinema Festival in September. 7-70km.


The towns of Vizcaya and Bilbao are 1-2 hours away. You can visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Guernica, Mundaka the Guggenheim museum or the natural parks of Urkiola or Urdaibai. 90-120km.
